Women?s Golf Finishes Seventh, Returns to NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Wash. ?- The Arizona women’s golf team carded a 19-over-par 307 in the third and final round of the West Regional at the Washington National Golf Course and finished seventh (910), earning an NCAA Championship birth.


Arizona freshman Sommer Scholl posted her lowest tournament score of the season with a seven-over-par 223, and finished in a tie for 13th place, her first top 20 finish of the season. Scholl also led the Wildcats, paring 39 of the 54 holes throughout the tournament. 


Purdue (881) held onto the tournament lead throughout the round and won the tournament.  UCLA finished second posting a combined score of 887 (+23), followed by Washington 888 (+24).  Stanford and Georgia took the fourth and fifth, respectively. 


Also earning a bid to the NCAA Championships was UNLV and Arkansas.  The top eight teams from each region will compete on May 23-26 at Ohio State.


Paige Mackenzie won her second consecutive individual title after shooting a 71 (-1) in round three.  Fresh off her victory at the Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, Ariz., Mackenzie posted scores under par in all three rounds of the West Regionals on her home course, and carded a career-low tournament score of 208 (-8).


Finishing in a tie for 32nd place were Arizona senior Cassandra Kirkland and freshman Adriana Zwanck, each posting a tournament score of 228 (+12).  Kirkland carded a 76 (+4) for the third consecutive round, while Zwanck shot a seven-over-par 79.


Freshman Lauren Espinosa shot an eight-over-par 80 and finished tied for 59th place.  Rounding out the Arizona squad was Amanda Wilson who posted her lowest score of the tournament (77) in round three and carded a tournament score of 247 (+31).


The Cats will have 10 days to prepare before heading to the NCAA Championships at Ohio State, May 23-26.
