TUCSON, Ariz. -

Head coach Niya Butts and the Arizona women’s basketball team open the 2012-13 season on Monday, Nov. 5 to host Grand Canyon University at McKale Center. The exhibition contest will begin at 7 p.m. MST.

The 2012-13 squad returns three starters and introduces seven newcomers to a team that went 15-17 in 2011-12.

Butts enters her fifth year as head coach at Arizona, assisted by Associate Head Coach Brandy Manning and Assistant Coach E.C. Hill. Assistant Coach Calamity McEntire joins the staff for her first season.

Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) embarks on her last season at Arizona in position to become one of the most notable players in Wildcat history. Going into the season, she ranks in the top 10 in several career categories in Wildcat history, including third in three-point field goals made and scoring average and fifth in all-time scoring.

UA also returns juniors Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) and Candice Warthen (Warrenton, Ga.). In 2011-12, Barnes led the team in rebounds (7.8 rpg) and Warthen was the team’s second-highest scorer (11.7 ppg) behind Whyte (17.0 ppg).

In addition, Arizona returns senior forwards Cheshi Poston (Chicago, Ill.) and Cheylene Harper (Asheville, N.C.) and sophomore guard Layana White (Lancaster, Calif.).

The Wildcats added four junior transfers, including one guard, two small forwards and one true forward. Kama Griffitts (Couer d’Alene, Idaho) makes her debut after taking a redshirt in 2011-12. Alli Gloyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) transferred from Mesa Community College, while Carissa Crutchfield (Ft. Gibson, Okla.) transferred from Oklahoma State and Lynette Holmes (Chicago, Ill.) from Xavier University.

Arizona also welcomes three freshman to the team in guard Keyahndra Cannon (San Diego, Calif.), guard Nyre Harris (Stockton, Calif.) and forward Shereen Sutherland (Corona, Calif.).

Although UA will open its season at home, it will spend a lot of November on the road. The team will travel to Bakersfield, Calif. at the end of the week to face Cal State Baksersfield on Friday, Nov. 9 and will turn around and travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The Wildcats will return home to host Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Nov. 17 and will host BYU at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. They will close out the month with a trip to the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam and then to Denton, Texas to face North Texas on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
