TUCSON - Sophomore KARINA CAMACHO blasted a 35th minute goal to give the Wildcats a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly- SLO in Sunday's season opener at Murphy Stadium.
The Tucson native got her feed from junior JACQUELINE BROUSSARD and connected from 18 yards in the top corner just out of the reach of Cal Poly goalkeeper Johanna Pfeiffer.
"It is so important to score early because we can control the game," said Coach Dan Tobias, "I thought in the second half we had a chance to put another ball in the net."
The lead was secured with the aid of junior goalkeeper CHELSEA McINTYRE, who finished with five saves. This was McIntyre's first game back since last year's season ending injury. Tobias said, "Chelsea played well saving some tough shots."
"I was a little nervous driving over here, but at the same time I was excited," said McIntyre, "I was glad to be out there with my teammates."
The win gives the Wildcats a 1-0 record to jumpstart their season. Next week the `Cats travel to Utah and face the Utah Utes on Friday and the Brigham Young Cougars on Sunday.
