TUCSON -

San Diego State broke away from a first place tie early in the second round and never looked back. The Aztecs had company most of day two before cruising to an eight stroke victory over second place Pepperdine.

A frost delay set things back over an hour early. It was cloudy, chilly and breezy all day, but in comparison to yesterday's rain and hail storms and most of the rest of the country's snowy misfortune today, Tucson was a pretty good place to be outdoors, playing golf today.

Individually, it was a two-man battle in the third round, ultimately won by Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam at seven-under. Putnam, a wire-to-wire medalist, held off Arizona's Stefan Cox, playing for the team's JV squad. Cox birdied five his first eight holes in round three before, but couldn't pick up the extra two shots needed, instead finishing three shots back of Putnam.

San Diego State shot an 859 (+7) on the tournament, eight better than second place Pepperdine. The Arizona JV team and Pacific tied for third at 17-over. UNLV, Arizona's varsity team and New Mexico finised 27-over and in a tie for fifth place. 2010 team champion California finised eighth.

An oddity, Arizona's JV team, paced by Cox, outplayed the varsity squad. The Arizona JV team finished tied for third, two strokes out of second place at 17-over. The Arizona JV team had two players log top-10 finishes with Cox and Juan Pablo Hernandez earning their first of the year.

The Wildcats' varsity team had climbed into second place, one-stroke off the lead, when they ran into the par-4 13th. The five players combined to drop 11 strokes. The blunder at 13 kickstarted a rough patch for the squad who finished the day tied for fifth place. Jonathan Khan finished tied for ninth.
