TUCSON, Ariz. - After getting the season started yesterday with a relay meet, the Arizona swimming team hosted a traditional dual meet with UNLV, Kansas and Arizona State, though the Cats and Devils did not swim against each other due to their head-to-head meet later this season.

On the women's side, the Wildcats defeated Kansas, 178-84, and UNLV, 176-82.  The Rebels however exacted some revenge on Arizona on the men's side, winning its matchup with the Cats, 138-123.

The UA women, made up of mostly freshmen, paced the Cats as the outcome was never really in doubt. Newcomer Margo Geer had several standout swims, winning the 50y freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 22.77.  Geer also won the 100 free in 49.68, was second in the 200 free with a 1:50.17 and was on the winning 400 medley relay team, splitting a 48.97 over the final 100 yards.

Junior Alyssa Anderson also shined for the Cats on Saturday morning as she won three events to catapult her team to the win.  The junior captain won the 200 free in 1:48.93, the 200 fly in 2:01.41 and the 200 I.M. in 2:05.80.

Another multiple winner for UA Saturday was Hannah Ross who took the 100 and 200 backstroke events with times of 56.00 and 1:59.91.  Ross also swam on the winning 400 medley relay, splitting a backstroke time of 56.15.  In the 200 I.M., Ross was fifth with a 2:07.52.

Grace Finnegan helped the Cats to two relay wins in the 400 medley and 400 free relay while also placing second in the 50 free at 23.87 and third in the 100 free at 51.77.  Swimming butterfly in the medley relay, Finnegan split a 57.23 while recording a 50.80 split in the free relay.

For the men, despite the defeat, the Cats turned in some quality swims against the Rebels.  Captain Cory Chitwood, swimming a few irregular events for him, won the 200 I.M. title in 1:50.42, was fourth in the 200 free in 1:42.45 and fifth in the 100 fly at 49.73.

Brazilian freshman Henrique Martins, swimming in his first collegiate dual meet, won the men's 100 backstroke in 50.07 and placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 48.74.

Fellow freshman Matt Barber took the 1000y freestyle event in 9:43.35 and finished second in the 500y free at 4:39.57.  The Kingwood, Texas native also was fourth in the 200y fly with a 1:56.51.

Junior A.J. Tipton won the 200 butterfly in 1:50.39 and was fourth in the 100 fly at 49.56.

The Arizona women improve to 2-0 in the dual meet season while the men stand at 0-1.

Next up, the Wildcats will host Wisconsin for a dual meet on Nov. 5 beginning at 2 p.m. MST.
