BERKELEY, Calif. ?- The No. 3 Arizona softball team (34-8, 5-5) came up one game short of a weekend sweep of the Bay Area schools, when it lost 5-1 to No. 6 Cal on Sunday afternoon.

Pitcher Alicia Hollowell (17-4) lasted five innings and was touched up for seven hits and four earned runs, despite striking out 10 Golden Bears.  Also, Hollowell’s only walk was an intentional free pass that she handed out in the fourth.

The Golden Bears jumped on UA hurler Alicia Hollowell early, as they put up one run on three hits in the first inning.  Cal tacked on another run in the third, in an inning that should have had no runs, but a wild pitch led to a dropped third strike to keep the frame alive.

Cal went on to score three more runs in the fourth, in an inning that included a hit by pitch, an intentional walk and a fielding error on the Cats.

Down five runs in the top of the fifth, UA mounted a rally, but came away with only one run.  An RBI single by Kristie Fox scored Caitlin Lowe, but that’s all the scoring Arizona would get.

Game notes:

-         Kristie Fox extended her hitting streak to three games.  She had at least one RBI in each game this weekend.

-         This is the first loss for Alicia Hollowell this season, in which, she did not allow a home run.

Up next: The Wildcats wrap up their eight-game road stretch with a game at UCLA and a pair at Washington on Saturday and Sunday.
