Freeman Takes First, Sets Personal Best

TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 10 men's and No. 13 women's track and field teams competed in the New Mexico Classic on Friday in Albuquerque, N.M. The meet is taking place at the Albuquerque Convention Center Track. The Wildcats claimed a victory in one event and set four personal-best marks on the day.

In the women's weight throw competition, senior Taylor Freeman had a personal-best toss of 62-1.75 (18.94m) and earned a first-place finish. In three weight throw competitions this season, Freeman has posted the three best marks of her career. Sophomore Baillie Gibson also posted a personal-best mark, taking third place with a toss of 59-1.50 (18.02m).

"I felt well throwing today but I know I have a lot more in me," Freeman said. "It's a great confidence boost to have thrown the top three marks of my career and I believe I will only get better as we go further in to the season."

Junior Shapri Romero competed in the 600-meter run and posted a time of 1:32.56, good for third place overall. Junior Germe Poston competed in the women's 200-meter dash and clocked a personal-best time of 24.40, good for second place overall. Freshman Azia Walker's time of 26.18 was good for 20th place overall.

Junior Sean Delfani clocked a time of 1:23.62 in the men's 600-meter run, earning a fifth-place finish. Junior Neil Houlihan's time of 1:23.89 was good for seventh place in his Arizona debut.

In the men's 200-meter dash, sophomore Branden Helms took 11th place with a time of 22.32. Sophomore Mohammad Alhasan finished in 17th place, posting a time of 22.54 in his season debut. Also making his season debut was sophomore Siraaj Ghori who clocked a personal-best time of 22.67, taking 18th place.

Competition resumes on Saturday with the field events starting at 10:30 a.m. and the running events beginning at 11 a.m.
