GLENVIEW, Ill. - Senior Brittany Benvenuto shot a 1-over par round of 73 to help #25-ranked Arizona to a third place finish at the 2009 Windy City Collegiate Championships, Tuesday afternoon at The Glen Club.
Benvenuto was very steady on a day when scores soared compared to the previous day of play, holding a score of 1-under through the first 12 holes before bogeys on 13 and 15 dropped her over par. Still, the round was much needed for the eldest member of the Wildcats who had not scored below 76 in any of her previous four rounds this season.
Sophomore Isabelle Boineau led the way overall for the Wildcats, shooting 75 on the day to end up 3-over par in a tie for 12th place for the tournament. Freshman Sherlyn Popelka completed her collegiate debut with a round of 76 and was one shot behind her teammate.
Sharing 18th place overall was sophomore Margarita Ramos, who carded a 79 on Tuesday to finish at 7-over for the 54-hole event. Benvenuto ended up tied for 47th at +14 while Alejandra Llaneza rounded out the team with a second-straight 79 to finish at 232.
Purdue went wire-to-wire to claim the team championship with an overall total of 4-under 860. Tulane was second at 10-over while the Wildcats ended up five shots ahead of both Notre Dame and tournament host Northwestern. Maude-Aimee Blanc of Purdue held off Ashley Bauer of Michigan to take the individual crown by one shot at 5-under par.
The Wildcats will split up their squad and head in opposite directions next week for a pair of tournaments. The junior varsity squad will take part in the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational hosted by New Mexico on October 12-14 while the top five players will compete in the Stanford Intercollegiate to be staged October 16-18.
