OKLAHOMA CITY ?- Arizona softball senior pitcher Alicia Hollowell and junior outfielder Caitlin Lowe were named to the National Training Team, announced today, by USA Softball and the Amateur Softball Association.  The team’s selection follows a four-day camp held Sept. 7-10 at the U.S. Olympic training center in Chula Vista, Calif.

Arizona and U.S. Olympic Head Coach Mike Candrea will lead the Pan American Qualifier Team Nov. 26-Dec. 5 in Guatemala City, Guatemala, at the qualifier tournament for the 2006 World Championships in Beijing, China, and at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Six of the 25 players named to the National Training Team are current or former Arizona student-athletes.  In addition to Hollowell and Lowe, Olympic gold medalists Jennie Finch and Lovie Jung, as well as former three-time All-American Toni Mascarenas and former All-Pacific-10 pick Mackenzie Vandergeest made the team.

The combination of six current and former UA players on the team marks the best-represented university, one ahead of UCLA’s five players.

The 2006 National Training Team will train together during selected weeks from January- May of 2006.

Last summer, Hollowell and Lowe competed for the Red, White and Blue at the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City and the Japan Cup in Yokohama.  In the two tournaments, Hollowell did not give up an earned run in 8.2 innings of work, during which time she struck out 12 batters.  Lowe started 11 of the 12 games, hit a combined .357, scored six runs and was successful on all four of her stolen base attempts.

Of her selection to the team Lowe says, “It is just amazing to be among the great players on the squad.  I am really looking forward to working with team, as we mold together.

“This summer I got to learn so much from the Olympic veterans,” Lowe says.  “It was a valuable experience, picking the brains of the other outfielders and taking in what they know.”

Hollowell says that her selection fulfills a life-long goal, “I am so excited to be a part of this team.  This summer was a great experience that helped me to learn about the game of softball at so many levels, and I can’t wait to continue with that.”

During the 2005 season, Hollowell was honored with her third All-American selection, and Lowe finished as a finalist for several national player of the year awards.
