Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller
"We wanted to win tonight, and it's disappointing that we didn't but I think our team is in a unique position in that we have scheduled our first exhibition game in October, and both teams are quality basketball programs (Seattle Pacific and Humboldt State). I have to give Seattle Pacific a lot of credit. They are disciplined, very well coached, and tonight they had three guys in double figures, like Jobi Wall with twenty-four points."
"We teach the guys in practice, but it's the games where we get the insight. At the same time, we do not have all the answers, trying to work four new guys into the rotation. Offense was better tonight. It was really the lack of defense that was the problem. When Seattle Pacific wanted a basket, they went inside, when they wanted a three, they took the shot. We probably had about four or five intelligence breakdowns, but at the same time, we are still 0-0."
"Exhibition is a time to learn about the team and improve, and that was accomplished tonight. We have to be better on both offense and defense, but it's hard to understand early how hard you have to play. It was hard to get second shots tonight because Seattle Pacific did an excellent job blocking out."
"We played better in the second half because our effort level went up, and we got a number of consecutive stops that helped us get back in. Our bigs though, had a rough night. In our center position, we had one defensive rebound for the entire game. We're still trying to figure out the best players to put out on the court, and unlike last year when we played ten each game, we might not play that many this season."
"We just have to get better. Next Tuesday we play Humboldt State, and they another very good Division II team that could win a championship. Against them, we will see a lot more like what we faced tonight."
Arizona Player Quotes
Junior Forward Solomon Hill:
If this game is a learning experience...
"This was the first time Jesse lost in McKale. It doesn't count toward our record though. We just need to watch film and get everybody on the same track. We just didn't execute on offense, or defense for that matter. We were leaving people on an island all game. We didn't do a very good job of helping. They ran a 4-out and they were all wide out. It was hard to help down low with that big guy down there."
On the comeback...
"We made some good plays down the stretch and we got the crowd fired up, but they punched us right back, and that sucks to get punched back."
On if the confidence of the young guys is shaken...
"They need to take this as motivation, at least that's how I would if I was in their situation. We just need to learn from out mistakes and pay more attention in practice. We're not going against our sets anymore, we're going against the other team's sets. We're going to have to start paying attention to the scouting in these games coming up."
Senior Forward Jesse Perry:
On his impression of the game...
"We just didn't execute like we usually do in practice. They pass, cut, and set screens. They don't do much dribbling like our guys do in practice because we have a lot of guys that can take you off the dribble."
"That's just something I can't explain, it was just one of those days. I probably had about two rebounds and that is unacceptable. We work on rebounding every practice, and we just didn't execute that tonight."
