Arizona junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell, sophomore shortstop Kristie Fox and sophomore center fielder Caitlin Lowe were named to a 40-member roster for the USA Softball Team camp January 3-7 in Chula Vista, Calif.
UA's Mike Candrea, the head coach of Team USA for the past several years and during its Olympic gold medal run this past summer, also will remain involved and be on hand for the camp. Eventually USA Softball will select an 18-player roster for a national team to represent the United States June 5-12 in Seattle, Wash., at the Pacific Rim Sports Summit. A second selection camp will be held June 12-17 to choose the 2005 USA Softball National and Elite teams that will compete in the remainder of the year’s international events.
The current UA players will be fighting a big battle for roster spots, including contention against three former UA players who helped Team USA win the gold -- pitcher Jennie Finch, infielder Lovie Jung, and outfielder Nicole Giordano. Finch and Jung medaled, while Giordano was an Olympic alternate.
