MALIBU, Calif. ?- The Arizona men’s tennis team completed the first day of main draw play at the Wilson/ITA Fall Regional Championships, hosted by Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. 10. Arizona had nine of its competitors competing in action today with matches against players from 6 schools in the 11 team field.

 

Competing for the Wildcats were seniors Colin O’Grady and Paul Warkentin, juniors Roger Matalonga and Tim Mullane, sophomores Nathan Cochrane and Jason Labrosse, and freshmen Bruno Alcala, Luka Cerenko, and Francois Vandermerwe.

 

In singles action today, the Wildcats had mixed results as they went 3-5 with some very well fought matches. Warkentin, in his only single match of the day, fell to Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, 6-3, 7-5. Labrosse returned to action this week in a hard fought battle against Alberto Francis of UCLA, falling to Francis 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. Cochrane fell to Rob Blair of the University of San Diego, 6-4, 6-3. Cerenko fell to Olof Sjolund of the University of California ?- Irvington, 6-4, 6-4. Alcala, in another very well fought match for him this fall, fell to Ivan d’Argence of the University of California ?- Santa Barbara, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6. On the other side of things, Mullane defeated Richard Johnson of Pepperdine, 4-3, after Johnson was forced to retire due to injury. Matalonga defeated Purav Kaja of Loyola Marymount University of 6-2, 6-1. Colin O’Grady defeated Beau Berlund of Loyola Marymount, 6-4, 6-4.

 

On the doubles side of the court, the Wildcats did not fare so well. Cerenko and Vandermerwe fell to Francis and Kwinta of UCLA, 8-3. Mullane and Warkentin fell to Van’t Hof and Wright of USC, 8-5. In a very well fought match, that took a few extra points to decide, Alcal and Labrosse fell to Basica and Stern of UCSB, 9-8. In the Wildcat only victory, Matalonga and O’Grady defeated Politanoff and Wojnarowicz of LMU, 8-4.

 

The Wildcats will return to the court at 9:00 am tomorrow, in singles action, as the doubles action will continue on later on in the afternoon.
