Tucson, Ariz.?- Arizona Football Training Camp Notes and Quotes...

...After a week of training camp the University of Arizona football team held its first scrimmage Saturday night in full pads at Arizona Stadium. “Obviously we have a long way to go. We have to clean up some of the mechanics of the game, way to many fumble snaps ?-you know beating ourselves, and that was something we said we didn’t want to do and that’s probably the most discouraging, interceptions you won’t win any games if you don’t clean that up. We just have to brush up on our mechanics,” Head coach Mike Stoops said after the scrimmage...

...Quarterbacks sophomore Kris Heavner and sophomore Ryan O’Hara shared the majority of the passing load on Saturday. Heavner was 8-of-17 for 123 yards and one interception . O’Hara was 5-of-10 for 37 yards and one interception ...

...Sophomore quarterback Ryan O’Hara recognized the mistakes the offense needed to work on?-in order to win during the season. “We had some good drives, we just had some mistakes once we got down there?-holding, fumble snaps, off sides, just mental mistakes,” he told reporters after the scrimmage...

...The offense utilized the running backs Saturday. Junior Mike Bell carried eight times for 49 yards, junior Gilbert Harris carried 17 times for 53 yards and redshirt freshman Chris Henry carried 17 times for 30 yards. “I thought the running backs did good job ?- (they had) a good opportunity to create some space,” Stoops said ...

...On the defensive side of the ball, both senior cornerback Luis Nunez and junior linebacker Sean Jones intercepted the quarterbacks and both returned them for touchdowns. Nunez’s interception came early in the scrimmage, intercepting an O’Hara pass attempt for a score. Jones waited until the end of the scrimmage to run back a Heavner interception 72-yards for a score. “Sean has to be more of a consistent player; he can make big plays?-he just has to learn to be more consistent,” Coach Stoops added ...

... The linebackers were successful Saturday night as well. Redshirt freshman Dane Krogstad and Lionel Dotson both sacked the quarterbacks, while senior Andre Torrey sacked the quarterbacks twice during the scrimmage ...

...The offense, faced with numerous third-and-longs Saturday evening, connected on several. In one case, Heavner hooked up with redshirt freshman wide receiver Anthony Johnson on a 21-yard catch, which sparked a drive down the field and ended with a Nick Folk 47-yard field goal...

...The kicking game was on a roll Saturday night. Both sophomore Nick Folk and freshman Jason Bondzio hit their field goals. Folk was 2-of-2, scoring from 47-yards and 50-yards out, while Bondzio was 1-of-1 for a 37-yard kick. “The kicking game was fabulous, I think it has a chance of being the strength of our team,” Coach Stoops commented...

...As a true freshman, kicker Jason Bondzio was excited at the opportunity he was given Saturday night. “I’ve been just waiting since I’ve gotten here...we just try to work a lot on our snaps and holds?-just get our timing down,” he told reporters Saturday...

...With several penalties during the scrimmage, head coach Mike Stoops wants to get better to prevent the penalties during the season. “We can’t play behind the chains, playing against good teams you can’t be giving up 5 yards here or there, a miss snap, a fumble ball, pressure sacks - you just can’t do that...we just have to find ways to get better,” he said Saturday after the scrimmage...

...After a week of practices the team will rest Sunday and return to the field for two-a-days starting Monday morning at 7:45 a.m. at Rincon Vista complex...
