TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's soccer team kicked off the Loews Ventana Canyon Cats Classic tournament with a 2-0 victory over Florida International on Friday night at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.

Sophomore Candice Osei-Agyemang scored her first goal of the season for Arizona (4-3) in the 33rd minute on a cross from teammate Emily Lai. In the 77th minute, junior forward Julia Glanz scored her second goal of the season after a shot from Osei-Agyemang was deflected off the Panthers goalkeeper, Kaitlyn Savage.

In a very physical match, the Wildcats out-shot Florida International (3-3-1) 21-5 with 12 of those shots taken in the first half. Junior Ana-Maria Montoya led Arizona on shot attempts with six and fellow junior Jazmin Ponce right behind her with five shots. Nine separate Arizona players added to the shot attempts including Hannah Wong, Kristin Strother, Shannon Heinzler, Susana Melendez, Ariel Boulicault, Julia Glanz, and Osei-Agyemang.

"The result was good, you can't complain about that," head coach Lisa Oyen said. "We hadn't had a win at home yet so that was one of our goals. We came out really strong, applied pressure and had some good shots. I thought that the team's persistence was good but we did break down a little in the second half."

In the net, Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman registered three saves for the Wildcats while Florida International goalkeeper, Savage, registered eight. Up next, Arizona will take on Loyola Marymount to conclude the Loews Ventana Canyon Cats Classic on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. on Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.

In the first match of the Cats Classic, Loyola Marymount (5-3-1) was defeated by Arizona State (3-4-1) 3-0. Three separate Sun Devils including Devin Marshall, Holland Crook, and Taylor McCarter scored in the victory. The Sun Devils are set to play Florida International at 12 p.m. at Muphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
