TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona football team’s first full day in pads was cut short, after very severe thunderstorms moved into the area from the southeast on Tuesday evening.

Practice started just before 6 p.m. local time with partly cloudy skies overhead. However, thunderstorms were building southeast of the area. After a half hour of individual drills, head coach Mike Stoops made the decision to speed the practice up and jump into the 20 minute “middle” segment, a period focused on running drills pitting the offense against the defense.

During the drill, thunderstorms intensified with frequent lightening and approached the area rapidly from the south and east. Due to lighting in the area, practice was called after about 50 minutes.

The team initially cleared the field and boarded the charter busses they travel on to and from McKale Center, attempting to wait out the storm. The strategy did not pan out, however, as the heavy winds, rain and dangerous lightening continued to move closer to the facility.

The decision was then made to cancel the rest of the practice and return to McKale Center. The Wildcats did not continue any drills inside.

The weather inconvenience was the first that the Wildcats have experienced during fall camp since 2004. Last year, several practice times or locations were changed due to weather or field conditions, but every workout was completed uninterrupted.

Robinson
The Wildcats did receive some good news earlier in the afternoon, as yet another player received clearance to participate in drills. Derke Robinson, a 6-0, 200lb freshman running back from Lewisville, Texas, dressed out for the first time, wearing No. 6.

Robinson joins Louis Holmes, Michael Turner and D’aundre Reed as players who have joined the team in official capacity since Fall Camp commenced last Thursday.

Because of the abrupt end to practice, no players or coaches spoke to the media afterwards. The team is scheduled to hold practice at the Rincon Vista Complex again at 6 p.m. tomorrow night. However, as with all practices, times and locations are subject to change due to weather or field conditions.
