Arizona women win Texas Invite, men finish second

AUSTIN - The Arizona swimming team's concluded the Texas Invitational today in Austin, Texas. The women won the invite, posting a score of 1,153.5. The Arizona men finished runner-up to champion Texas, scoring 938.5 points.

The day was highlighted again by junior Ana Agy who set another school record, this time in the 200 yard backstroke. After posting a record breaking time of 1:53.31 in the prelims, she topped that in the finals with a time of 1:52.47. The mark took down Beth Botsford's time of 1:53.52 set in 2000.

Justine Schluntz won the women's 100 freestyle with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 47.80. Arizona posted six of the top eight times in both the 100 free and 200 back.

Julie Stupp finished second in the women's 200 yard breaststroke, but she was able to earn an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:10.00.

On the men's side, Jake Tapp was victorious in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:41.54 In the 200 yard butterfly, freshman AJ Tipton posted an NCAA automatic qualifying of 1:42.48 while winning the event.

In the men's 1650 freestyle, Jean Basson finished runner-up to Michael Klueh of Texas, turning in a time of 14.52.20.

Arizona is off until Jan. 2, when it will host Oregon State, Northern Arizona and Washington as part of a dual meet.
