TUCSON--Heather Bell's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth gave Southern Mississippi the edge it needed in a 6-3 victory over Eastern Michigan in Saturday's first game of Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.
Eastern Michigan's Genny Hann reached second base on an outfield error and scored on a fielder's choice to open the scoring in the second. Lauren Allen doubled and later scored on a grounder to give EMU a 2-0 lead in the third.
Tammy Edwards singled in a run for Southern Miss in the bottom of the third and Melanie Hymel hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2 in the fourth, but Allen hit a two-out homer in the fifth to get the lead back for the Eagles. Channika Gant homered for Southern Miss in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
Golden Eagles' reliever Jessica Holaway (4-2), who entered in the fifth, earned the victory and struck out the side in the top of the seventh.
Southern Miss improved to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in tourney play. Eastern Michigan dropped to 3-8 and 1-2.
