SAN DIEGO--The University of Arizona football team arrived here late Wednesday afternoon on a U.S. Airways charter flight to set up headquarters at a downtown hotel and begin final preparations for a Dec. 30 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl showdown against Nebraska.
The No. 22-ranked Wildcats (8-4) meet the No. 20 Cornhuskers (9-4) a week hence, but flew to San Diego a bit early because of potential travel conflicts surrounding the holidays. Nebraska has a charter out of the snowy Midwest scheduled for Thursday.
The Wildcats checked into their hotel and soon after got back on buses for a ride to Qualcomm Stadium and some seats in the stands at the Poinsettia Bowl, where league colleague Cal lost to Utah of the Mountain West, 37-27.
UA and NU, runners-up in their respective conferences, the Pac-10 and Big 12, will re-visit their 1998 Holiday Bowl matchup won by Arizona, 23-20. The programs tied in Lincoln, Neb., 14-14, in 1961 in the only other meeting in the series.
UA will hold closed practices at the University of San Diego the next five days before a final walk-through on the 29th.
