TUCSON, Ariz.- Former Wildcat Jeff Casper has been hired as the volunteer assistant coach for the 2002 season, head coach Andy Lopez announced today. A spring graduate of the university, Casper was a four year catcher/infielder for the team from 1998-2001.

Casper, who hit .276 in 20 games for the Cats last season, was honored with the Jim McConnell award as the most inspirational player as voted by his teammates. He was also named the inaugural recipient of the Kelsey Osburn Award, presented to an Arizona player by the local professional scouts who demonstrates the best hustle and work ethic on the field.

"I'm pleased to have Jeff working with us," Lopez said. "He, along with assistant coach Jeff Morris are from Tucson and know the area and the talent here. Jeff (Casper) has a good work ethic, a great attitude and the respect of his former teammates."

Born and raised in Tucson, Casper graduated from Salpointe High School where he was a four-year letter winner and the 5A South Athlete of the Year his senior season.
