TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 15 University of Arizona women’s gymnastics team will participate in its 21st-consecutive postseason when it hosts the 2007 NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Saturday, April 14, at 6 p.m. in McKale Memorial Center.

The Wildcats will be joined by No. 4 Stanford, No. 8 Oregon State, No. 20 Illinois, Arizona State and Illinois-Chicago, the NCAA announced on Monday. Joining the six qualifying teams are individual qualifiers from Southeast Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Illinois State and Texas Women’s University.

The South Central Region is one of six regionals hosted around the country. Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event [who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.4] were named to each of the six regions. The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Salt Lake City on April 26-29, hosted by the University of Utah. In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.

Last Saturday, Arizona placed fourth at the Pac-10 Championships with a score of 196.000. In the meet, Oregon State placed third behind champion UCLA and runner-up Stanford. Arizona State placed sixth.

Last season, Arizona finished third in the North Central Regional Championships held in Ames, Iowa, placing behind Arizona State and host Iowa State. The Wildcats last qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2002, advancing out of West Regional held in Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona last hosted the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in 2004, when the Wildcats placed third behind Utah and Florida.
