TUCSON, Ariz. - The Wildcats women’s golf team shot a +6, 290 in the first
round of the Wildcat Invitational and finished the day tied for 8th place.
Leading the Wildcats in the individual category is senior Cassandra Kirkland.
After eagling her final hole,
Wildcat freshman Lauren Espinosa shot an E, 71 and sits tied for 16th place.
Two strokes behind Espinosa is fellow freshman Amanda Wilson who shot a +2, 73
and finds herself tied for 35th place.
Four Wildcats tied for 63rd place after the first round. Freshmen Adriana
Zwanck and Sommer Scholl along with junior Rachel Gavin and senior Whitney
Welch all shot a +6, 77.
Both Scholl and Gavin are competing for the junior varsity
competing for the junior varsity team are Marisa Smith, who shot a +9, 80,
Brittany Pepler, who shot a +13, 84 and Brooke Schneider, who shot a +17, 88.
“I think we came out and played real hard today,” head coach Greg Allen
said. “We had a very strong finish which hopefully will carry over into the
next few rounds.”
Duke shot a -3, 281 and currently sits atop the leader board and
only one stroke behind with a -2, 282. USC and
fourth place teams, respectively.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with the completion of the second round, which was suspended due to darkness, followed by the third and final round.
