TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 2 Arizona softball team notched a last-second win over No. 3 Cal on a seventh-inning grand slam by Kristie Fox on Saturday, 4-2.
Cal took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, when third baseman Vicky Galindo got a leadoff triple to the gap in right center. Left fielder Lindsay James put down a bunt to drive in Galindo and give the Bears a one-run edge.
In the top of the fifth, Cal got its second run of the game when right fielder Alex Sutton led off with a bunt single. With two out and Sutton on second, center fielder Kaleo Eldredge dribbled a single up the right field line to score Sutton and put the Bears up, 2-0.
Arizona remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. With two out and Allyson Von Liechtenstein on first, Caitlin Lowe reached first on a fielder’s choice and Von Liechtenstein got to second on a Cal error. Autumn Champion put down a bunt to load the bases, and Kristie Fox hit a first-pitch grand slam over the fence in left center to give the Cats the win.
Alicia Hollowell got her 19th win, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out nine and walking three. Arizona got its 28th overall win and its second Pac-10 victory.
The Wildcats will take on the Bears again on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hillenbrand Stadium.
