PALM SPRINGS, Calif. ?- The top-ranked Arizona softball team (15-1) lost, 1-0, to Cat Osterman and the No. 4 Texas Longhorns (17-1) in the final game of the Palm Springs Classic.

Two batters into the game, Longhorn shortstop Desiree Williams hit a home run to left-center field for the game’s only run.  The home run was caught by UA center fielder Caitlin Lowe, but umpires ruled that Lowe did not have possession of the ball before she knocked down the temporary fencing at the Big League Dreams complex.

From that point on, UA pitcher Taryne Mowatt (7-1) went on to scatter six more hits over her seven innings of work, without giving up another run.  Two-time National Player of the Year Cat Osterman did her one better, however, striking out 18 Wildcats in her seven shutout innings.

UA mounted several threats, including one in the sixth inning, but could not scratch a run across.  In the bottom of the sixth inning, Caitlin Lowe had a one-out single up the middle and stole second base, but UA could not get her around.

Texas’ only loss on the year came to Arizona at the Kajikawa Classic by the same, 1-0, margin as today’s game.

Arizona returns to Hillenbrand Stadium for the Hillenbrand Invitational for five games from March 3-5.  Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4 are Poster Days, in which the first 500 fans will receive Arizona softball posters.
