IRVINE, Calif. - Debora Castany, Elizabeth Hammond, Lacey Smyth and Kim Stubbe are representing the Wildcats in the 2010 University of California, Irvine Intvitational. Play began Friday and started well for the Cats.
The freshman duo of Smyth and Stubbe defeated Kwan and Goettsching from UCI, 8-3. Castany and Hammond teamed up to beat Wahinepio and Perez from NAU, 8-6.
In round one of singles gold play Smyth defeated University of California, Riverside's Sakhakorn 6-2, 6-0. Smyth went on to win 6-1, 7-5 against Kwan from UCI. Stubbe defeated NAU's Golovics 6-0, 6-2 in round one but lost to Byron from UCI, 6-3, 7-5.
In singles blue Castany played Bergesoon from UCR for a 6-1, 6-3 win and went on to defeat Goettsching from UCI 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Hammond lost her first match against Wahinepio from NAU, 6-4, 6-2, as well as her consolation match to UCR's McKay 6-0, 6-3.
"The team did a very good job in the doubles today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "I felt that they were truly putting the pieces together and making smart choices. In singles, we were a bit more up and down but certainly there was a lot of effort and I liked seeing that."
