Three Wildcats Advance to Pac-10 Quarterfinals

Tucson - The University of Arizona women's tennis team will advance three singles players after the first day of play at the 2011 Pacific-10 Championships. Senior Jane Huh and freshmen Susan McRann and Kim Stubbe will all advance to the quarterfinals of invitational singles play. In singles championship play freshman Lacey Smyth and juniors Natasha Marks and Sarah Landsman fell in tough competition at Libby Park in Ojai, Calif.

In singles championship play, Marks and Smyth fell in round of 32 while Landsman advanced to round of 16 but was ultimately defeated. Marks played Annie Goransson from California. The Nottingham, England native was edged 6-4, 6-3. Smyth battled the 8th seed Tayler Davis also from California. Smyth fell 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6. The loss marks only her seventh of the season. In round of 32, Landsman beat Stanford's Carolyn McVeigh, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to round of 16. In her second match of the day Landsman played the 3rd seed of Kelcy McKenna from Arizona State. The Syosset, N.Y. native won the first set 3-6 but fell 6-1, 6-1 and lost the match. To view the singles championship draw, click here.

In singles invitational play, Huh, McRann, and Stubbe all had byes in round of 32 play and went on to win in round of 16. Huh beat Olga Musilovich from Washington State, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The squad's only senior will face the 4th seeded Alice Duranteau from California at 12 p.m. on Friday. McRann faced Vanja Redunovic from Washington for a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The Dublin, Ireland native will play Natalie Dillon from Stanford at 12 p.m. on Friday. The second seeded Stubbe beat Amelia Herring from Stanford, 6-3, 6-0. She will battle Sianna Simmons from Arizona State at 12 p.m. on Friday. To view the singles invitational draw, click here.

On Friday, the doubles teams of Landsman and Stubbe and Marks and Smyth will compete in the doubles championships. Landsman and Stubbe are set to play the third seeded team of McCall Jones and Noelle Hickye from UCLA at 9 a.m. Marks and Smyth are matched up against Venise Chan and Samantha Smith from Washington and will play at 10 a.m. To view the doubles championship draw, click here.

Also scheduled for Friday is doubles invitational play. The fourth seeded team of Jane Huh and Susan McRann will represent Arizona. The duo has a bye in the round of 32 and will take on Stephany Chang and Catie Visco from California at 3 p.m. To view the invitational doubles draw, click here.
