Sept. 13, 2008
For the second time in 2008, the Arizona volleyball team won a weekend tournament and sophomore Paige Weber was named MVP.
The Wildcats (8-1) beat host CSU Bakersfield 3-0, 25-17, 25-9, 25-20, Saturday night to finish the invitational 3-0.
Weber was named tournament MVP for the second time in 2008. She also won the Wildcat Classic MVP. She recorded 34 assists in the win over the Roadrunners after picking up 46 earlier in the day in the win over Fresno State.
“She was terrific,” Arizona head coach Dave Rubio said about Weber. “She continues to get better and improve. Just like our team, she’s a work in progress.”
The win over CSU Bakersfield was Rubio’s second over his former team and first playing in Bakersfield during the regular season.
Rubio coached for five years, including a national title, with CSUB.
He said he really enjoyed being back at the school where he got his start and seeing so many of his friends from his days as CSUB.
Joining Weber on the all-tournament team were sophomore outside hitter Whitney Dosty and junior middle blocker Jacy Norton. Dosty recorded 11 kills in the championship game and Norton added six kills and six blocks.
As a team, Arizona outhit CSUB .424 to .140.
“We’re slowly making progress and getting better,” said Rubio. “We’re still working on a lot of things and trying to get better. We’re getting closer to where we need to be.”
Senior Brooke Buringrud led the Wildcats with 14 kills and a .650 hitting percentage.
Arizona heads to its final tournament of the year next weekend in Houston where they will face Stephan F. Austin, Loyola Marymount, and Houston. The Wildcats open the tournament Friday, Sept. 19 against Stephan F. Austin at 5:30 p.m.
