Arizona Volleyball Notes - Regional Finals

Arizona in the Elite Eight -

- Arizona has advanced to the regional finals for the second consecutive season. It equals the furthest into the postseason the Wildcats have ever advanced.

- Last season Arizona was swept in the Elite Eight by Nebraska in Lincoln. It was the only time Arizona lost a match 3-0 in 2000.

Arizona Against USC -

- The Wildcats and USC split their season series in 2001. Each team won on their respective home floors in 3-0 sweeps. The Women of Troy played outstanding at home in the September meeting in the Lyon Center, hitting .450 with 61 kills on 109 swings and 12 errors. April Ross, Alicia Robinson and Keao Burdine had 16, 15 and 13 kills, respectively in the win. The loss was the second straight for Arizona, its longest losing streak of the season. The Wildcats repaid USC in kind in McKale Center at the end of October. UA tallied 58 kills on 119 attempts with only 11 errors for a .395 hitting percentage. Wildcat junior Shannon Torregrosa was nearly unstoppable en route to AVCA National Player-of-the-Week honors with 19 kills on .405 hitting. The loss snapped USC's 13 match winning streak.

- USC leads the all-time series between the two schools 37-13, but the Wildcats and Women of Troy are deadlocked at 3-3 in the last three years.

- Arizona and USC have met in the NCAA Tournament three times since 1981 (1981, 1983, 1994). The Wildcats defeated Southern California in Los Angeles in the first round of the 1983 tournament. USC has won two of the meetings, including the last in the 1994 regional semifinals in Palo Alto, Calif.

- Arizona has never played USC in the Sports Arena in volleyball.

- The Wildcats last defeated the Women of Troy in Los Angeles during the regular season in 1999 in Pac-10 Conference play.

After the Pacific Match -

- With the win over No.12 Pacific, Arizona is now 7-4 against teams ranked in the top 25 in 2001.

- The victory over the Tigers improves Arizona's postseason record to 18-16 all-time, marking the first time ever the Wildcats are assured of having a .500-plus record in the postseason.

- Since 1992, when current head coach David Rubio took over, Arizona is 14-7 in eight postseason tournaments. Rubio's .667 winning percentage in the NCAAs is the best for any Arizona head coach.

- Senior right side hitter Jill Talbot is just three kills shy of 1,000 for her career. Should she achieve the milestone she would become just the 12th player in school history to do so and just the second Arizona player ever to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.

- With her match-high 14 kills against Pacific, junior outside hitter Shannon Torregrosa has now led Arizona in kills in a team-high 12 matches.
