Polk Named WBCA NCAA Division I Player of the Month for February

Atlanta Ga., - University of Arizona sophomore center Shawntinice Polk has been named the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division I Player of the Month for February.

Polk averaged 18.1 points, 12.9 rebounds, had 22 assists and 25 blocked shots, giving Arizona a share of the program's first Pac-10 regular-season championship. Arizona tied for first place with Stanford at 14-4 in Pac-10 play and the two teams are Conference Co-Champions. Twice in the month of February, Polk has earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors, which is her third this season.

On February 21, Polk became Arizona's all-time shot blocker in an 84-58 victory over Oregon. She also surpassed the 1,000-point mark with 22 points against Washington on February 28. To round out the month, Polk moved to 9th on the Pac-10 career list for double-doubles - 36 career double-doubles ties for most ever by a Wildcat.

The Wildcats finished 22-7 overall, and 14-4 in the Pac-10. Their 14-4 Conference mark ties for the best league record ever compiled by a Wildcat team. Arizona earned the No. 2 seed in the State Farm Pac-10 Tournament, where they advanced to the final versus Stanford and fell just short, 51-46. The Wildcats earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they will face Michigan State in the first round on Sunday, March 21.

Polk is also among the 21 finalists for The State Farm Wade Trophy.

*WBCA NCAA Division I Player of the Month honors is based on achievements during respective month for nomination and game-by-game statistics. All nominations must come from the conference office and the player's head coach must be a member of the WBCA.
