Women's Tennis Falls To Florida In 2nd Round

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Arizona women's tennis team was eliminated from the 1999 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships by No. 1 seed Florida (28-1), 5-1, in the second round of the championships Sunday in Gainesville, Fla.

The Wildcats (8-14), who beat Auburn in the first round of the championships, managed to win one singles event against the No. 1 team in the nation. Freshman Carly Stinger (Lauton, Bicester, England), playing in the No. 6 slot, topped M.C. White in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.

Playing No. 1 for the Wildcats, freshman Lindsay Blau (Ossining, N.Y.) lost to Whitney Laiho, 6-0, 6-4. Senior Monique Allegre (Camarillo, Calif.) lost to Stephanie Nickitas,, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Michelle Gough (Johannesburg, South Africa) lost to Jessica Lehnhoff, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). Sophomore Joanna Buczowska (Zakopane, Poland) lost to Stephanie Hazlett, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Vanessa Abel (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic H.S.) lost to Traci Green, 6-0, 6-1.

The win was Florida's 58th straight at home. The Gators move on the round of 16 to play Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt.

Arizona concludes its season with an 8-14 record.
