BERKELEY, Calif. -- Third-ranked Arizona took advantage of some late California miscues and won its first extra-inning game of the season, 4-2, in a nine-inning pitchers' duel with the No. 13 Bears Saturday.

UA's Kenzie Fowler (29-5) struck out 11 and scattered seven hits in the complete game victory.

Her counterpart, Valerie Arioto (17-7), matched her pitch for pitch through eight, but was given the hook after Arizona broke the tie in the ninth.

Arizona improved to 40-7 and 10-4 in Pac-10 play. Cal dropped to 35-15 and 5-9.

Through seven scoreless innings, Brittany Lastrapes hit a one-out double in the eighth then moved to third when Lauren Schutzler reached on an error. K'Lee Arredondo hit a grounder to second baseman Shannon Thomas, but Lastrapes beat the throw home on a close play to put Arizona on the board. Schutzler, meanwhile, was caught in a rundown on the play. Brigette Del Ponte singled off the glove of Arioto but Lini Koria struck out to end the threat.

Jace Williams tied the game with a home run to open the bottom half, but Fowler got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the inning.

Arizona opened up a 4-1 lead in the ninth. Baillie Kirker drew a walk and Kristen Arriola singled to left before Karissa Buchanan advanced them with a sacrifice bunt. Arioto, not wanting to deal with Lastrapes, issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Schutzler came through with a hard grounder that Thomas booted at second, allowing pinch runner Becca Tikey to score. Arredondo drew a bases-loaded walk, then Arioto was given the hook in favor of Jolene Henderson. Stacie Chambers hit a sac fly to score Lastrapes, but Del Ponte struck out.

Fowler allowed a two-out RBI single in the bottom half, but forced a groundout to close the game.

UA and Cal wrap up the season series tomorrow at noon.
