TUCSON, Ariz. - For the second straight month, Arizona sophomore Kevin Cordes has been named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month, Commissioner Larry Scott announced on Tuesday.
Following an incredible November in which Cordes set two American records (100 breast/200 breast), he earned a pair of medals at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Cordes got the event started with a bronze medal in the 100 breast with a time of 57.83, which was his first career medal in international competition.
He followed that up with a gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay. Cordes (57.15) and teammates Matt Grevers (50.00), Tom Shields (48.66) and Ryan Lochte (45.22), turned in a total time of 3:21.03 to claim the victory.
This is Cordes' third career Swimmer of the Month award and Arizona's eighth all-time. Along with winning the award in December, Cordes also earned the honor in January of last year.
The Arizona swim teams will be back in action on January 25 and 26. The Wildcats will host California and Stanford on back-to-back days in Pac-12 dual competition at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
