Provo, Utah. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team (7-1-0, 0-0-0) took on Brigham Young (3-5-0, 0-0-0) in their eighth match of the season. The Wildcats scored in the second half and held on to defeat the Cougars, 1-0.

The first half presented many opportunities for both squads, but neither team was able to convert. It appeared as though the Wildcats had scored when senior Kamaya Damwijk headed a cross from freshman Sally Thurner into the back of the net. The goal was not allowed due to an off sides call. The Wildcats had three shots in the first half, while the Cougars had seven.

Freshman Amanda Urtuzuastegui scored in the second half at 71:20 to break the 0-0 tie. The goal is the first of the season for Urtuzuastegui, and was scored off of a corner kick from freshman Kaity Heath. The Wildcats had six shots in the second half over the Cougars’ three.

Freshman goalkeeper McCall Smith recorded her sixth shutout of the season with seven saves on the night. BYU’s Erika Woodbury had four saves with one goal allowed.

Head Coach Dan Tobias felt that the game was competitive throughout.

“It was a really tight game from beginning to end,” he said. “We had good chances before and after the goal. Their goalkeeper made some great saves. Everyone on our team had great opportunities.”

He was impressed with the intensity of the BYU squad.

“They were a very strong team,” Tobias explained. “They had great team speed and were able to get in behind the defense.”

There were 1044 fans in attendance at South Field on the campus of Brigham Young.

“It was a tough game to play at their place,” Tobias said. “It was a good college soccer environment with a nice big crowd.”

Arizona will prepare to compete against the Weber State Wildcats.

“This game was a good building block on our last road trip of the non-conference schedule,” he said. “Now we will get ready for Weber State on Saturday.”

The Wildcats will travel to Ogden, Utah to take on the Weber State Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. MST.
