Wildcat Swimming and Diving Travel to Bay Area to Face Stanford and California

This Week's Schedule: The No. 3 ranked Arizona women and the No. 9 ranked Wildcat men travel to Stanford on Friday to compete against the top-ranked Cardinal women and men. Then on Saturday the Cats will face the No. 6 California women and the No. 7 California men in Berkeley.

The Cats Last Outing: The Arizona women's swimming team continued its winning streak as they defeated the seventh-ranked women of Southern Methodist last weekend 146-108. With the win the Cats moved to 5-0 on the 2001-02 season. On the men's side of the event Arizona lost to SMU 134-128, making the men 3-1 on the season. For the Arizona women junior Beth Botsford touched the wall first in three individual events, the 100y back (55.04), the 200y back (1:58.42) and the 100y fly (56.48). Botsford was also part of the first place 200y medley relay team which touched the wall at 1:42.83. Along with Botsford on the relay team were sophomore Jessica Wagner, and seniors Amy Bouta and Jenny Vanker. On the men's side of the meet sophomore Greg Owen and senior Roland Schoeman each won two events. Owen captured both of the breaststroke events. In the 100y breast he touched at 57.25 and in the 200y breast he touched at 2:03.94. Schoeman was victorious in the 50y (19.99) and the 100y (44.62) free.

The Newest Members of the Wildcats Squad: This year the Cats welcome eight new women on the team and six new men. On the women's side there are two transfer students in Lindsey Highstrom and April Martin. Highstrom comes to the Cats from the University of Nebraska while Martin comes from Rice University. Highstrom and Martin will bring added depth to the butterfly and breaststroke events. Six freshman will join the women's ranks, four swimmers and two divers. For the Arizona men, all six new members are freshman. These men will add depth in the IM, freestyle and breaststroke events.

The Wildcats Next Outing: The Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams will wrap up their 2001-02 home schedule Fri., Feb. 1 - Sat., Feb. 2 against the Texas Longhorns. The meet will also mark the last home event for this year's Wildcat seniors.
