11.11.11 Georgia Southern Game Notes Get Acrobat Reader

TUCSON - In women's basketball action, the Arizona Wildcats and the Georgia Southern Eagles will officially open the 2011-12 slate with a contest at Hanner Fieldhouse, in Statesboro, Ga., on Fri., Nov. 11. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. ET.

Under fourth-year head coach Niya Butts, Arizona returns five letterwinners and welcomes six newcomers, including three true freshmen, for the 2011-12 season. Junior guard Davellyn Whyte, a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree, leads the Cats with her returning 15.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game from a year ago. Senior guard Shanita Arnold led UA in assists in 2010-11 with her 4.9 per game.

The Georgia Southern Eagles were picked seventh in a preseason poll of the Southern Conference's 11 head coaches. Junior Meredyth Frye was also named to the league's Preseason All-Conference team. The Eagles open the 2011-12 season on Nov. 11 against Arizona. Georgia Southern finished last season with a 12-18 record and a 9-11 mark in the Southern Conference. Frye led the team with 11.6 points per game last season and was second on the team with 5.2 rebounds per contest.

This weekend's games will mark a homecoming for a few members of the Arizona women's basketball family. Butts hails from Americus, sophomore guard Candice Warthen and video coordinator Jaamal Rhodes are from Warrenton, athletic trainer Bryce Sorrier is a native of Statesboro and assistant coach Brandy Manning attended Clark Atlanta University.

In Arizona's two exhibition games, Warthen averaged 16.5 points per game while dishing out 4.0 assists per game. Four players averaged in double figures as junior forward Cheshi Poston and sophomore forward Erica Barnes led at the glass with 7.5 rebounds per game.

Arizona women's basketball games can be heard live on KTUC AM 1400. All broadcasts will start 15 minutes prior to tip-off for the pregame show.
