TUCSON, Ariz. -

The Arizona Swimming and Diving team split with USC on Friday at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The men won, 193.5-106.5 and the women fell in a tight competition, 156-144.

Relays proved to be a high point for Arizona once again, as all four teams remained undefeated.

The Wildcats kicked off the meet with a win in the men's and women's 200 free relay. The men's winning team included, sophomores Mitchell Friedemann (Allenton, Wis.), Giles Smith (Baltimore, Md.) and Tommy Gutman (Jacksonville, Fla.) and senior Kelley Wyman (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) and the women's winning team included sophomores Sarah Denninghoff (Tucson, Ariz.), Aubrey Peacock (Jacksonville, Fla.), Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) and junior Ellyn Baumgardner (Fairfax, Va.).

In the 200 free, Wyman, Smith and Friedemann joined senior Cameron Owen (Fishers, Ind.) for the men's victory and Geer, senior Emma Darlington (Tucson, Ariz.), junior Monica Drake (Bloomington, Ind.) and sophomore Grace Finnegan (Columbus, Ohio) won on the women's side.

In addition to her two relay wins, Geer also posted first-place finishes in the 50 free and the 100 free. Peacock came out on top in the 100 back, Baumgardner won the 100 breast and senior Alyssa Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) won the 200 fly for the Wildcats.

"I was really pleased with both teams," Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. "The women lost a close, hard-fought battle, but we made a lot of progress."

Seven Arizona men recorded victories in eight events, as senior Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.) finished first in the 200 back and 400 IM, sophomore Kevin Cordes (Naperville, Ill.) won the 100 breast, sophomore Carl Mickelson (Chandler, Ariz.) won the 200 breast, sophomore Matt Barber (Kingwood, Texas) won the 500 free, Friedemann took first in the 100 back, Wyman the 50 free and Smith the 100 fly.

"On the men's side, we needed to be sharper and we were," Hansen said. "Everybody took a step forward and I saw progress in all of the little things and it really made me happy."

In diving competition, senior Ben Grado (Conifer, Colo.) continued his undefeated streak, winning on the 1m and the 3m for the Wildcats. Sophomore Samantha Pickens (Murrysville, Pa.) posted two runner-up finishes for the women on both boards behind USC's Victoria Ishimatsu.

The Arizona women's team will return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 12 to take on No. 25 UCLA at 11 a.m. at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Admission is free to the public.
