TUCSON, Ariz.Defending national champion Oklahoma banged out 13 hits and pitcher Jennifer Stewart held Western Michigan to four as the Sooners beat the Broncos, 10-1, the final Saturday game of Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational tournament.
OU improved to 17-2 and meets No. 2 ranked Arizona in what amounts to the title game of the round-robin tourney, at 1 p.m. Sunday. Each team is 4-0.
WMU dropped to 1-3, and meets Baylor, 2-2 in the tournament, at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Game 11 Arizona 12, Western Michigan 0
TUCSON, Ariz.The Wildcats continued to hit and pitch the ball and improved to 26-0 with a 12-0 victory over Western Michigan in Day 2 of Arizona's own Hillenbrand Invitational.
WMU dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in tournament action.
Leneah Manuma hit a solo home run in the third to
stretch a Wildcat lead to 3-0, then Jennie Finch hit a
grandslam and Toni Mascarenas a two-run homer to
punctuate Arizona's nine-run fifth inning. Eight
consecutive batters scored in the frame.
Becky Lemke limited the Broncos to one hit and struck out to nine improve to 10-0.
Arizona has 65 team home runs in its 26 games, in reach of the NCAA record set by the 1995 Arizona team.
Game 10 Arizona 12, Indiana State 0
TUCSON, Ariz.Arizona freshman Jenny Gladding pitched
the first no-hitter of her career and the Cats smacked five home runs to propel the No. 2-ranked Wildcats to a five-inning 12-0 victory over Indiana State.
Gladding struck out six, walked one and one batter reached on a fielding error, to face two over the minimum.
UA had a two-run homer by Toni Mascarenas, a two-run blast by Allison Andrade, a grandslam by Mackenzie Vandergeest and a two-run shot by Gladding, all in the first two innings, then added a solo homer by Gladding in the fourth. Gladding's two gave her six for the year.
Game 9 - Oklahoma 11, Creighton 3
TUCSON, Ariz.No. 5-ranked Oklahoma scored early and late to defeat Creighton, 11-3, in second-day action at Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational. The game ended in six innings because of the mercy rule.
OU (16-2) took a quick lead, 3-0, in the first. Christy Ring singled and stole second, then scored on Lisa Carey's double. Mandy Fulton doubled to drive in Carey and scored an unearned run on a two-out error by the second baseman.
Carey drove two more runs in with a second-inning single and Fulton added an RBI on a grounder to make it 6-0.
The Sooners had a big sixth inning. Ring's triple followed a double by Kelli Braitsch, then Carey doubled to give the Sooners an 8-1 lead. After a grounder moved Carey to third, Ashli Barrett followed with an RBI single and a short while later Jennifer Stump doubled in two more runs.
Creighton (3-6) put a run across in the third when Rebecca Goodspeed hit a two-out single and scored on Stacey Rybar's double to right-center. Creighton scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Blue Jays suffered their third loss in four games at the tournament. OU remained undefeated at 3-0.
