The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to the San Diego State Aztecs at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Cats dropped the doubles point but fought back hard to clinch two singles matches.

"We were right in there. San Diego State played well. We almost snuck out the doubles point. There is a lot of youth to our team. I believe in them, they just need to believe in themselves, I think is what it comes down to. I think our guys got it, they just really have to believe in themselves."

The Cats were swept in doubles action but forced two of three matches to nine games. On court two, Kieren Thompson and Sumeet Shinde were first to finish in their match with Thorsten Bertsch and Derek Siddiqui. The duo was edged, 8-4. Next to finish was the team of Mario Urquidi and Carlos Bermudez on court three. The Southwest based duo fought a back and forth match but was ultimately edged, 9-7, by Spencer Simon and Ricky Baylon. On court one, Andre Vidaller and Sebastian Ionescu remained locked in a close fight with Javier Pulgar and Hunter Nicholas. The match entered a tiebreak at eight games all where the Wildcat duo fell, 9-8 (1).

With the doubles point in favor of the Aztecs the match entered singles play. The Cats fought back but a little too late with Urquidi and Thompson clinching singles wins.

On court four, Bermudez was first to finish in his match with Freddy Gelbrich. The Tucson local fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Ionescu finished second on court five. The freshman from Braila, Romania fell 6-2, 6-3 to Nicholas.

Vidaller was back in action after taking time off because of an injury. The sophomore from Santos, Brazil fell 6-4 in the first set and was down 4-2 in the second set when his injury began to flair up again and he was forced to retire. The loss marked the fourth point in favor of the Aztecs and clinched the match in their favor.

On court three, Shinde was next to finish in his match with Bertsch. The freshman from Pune, India fell 6-4 in the first set and forced the tiebreak in the second set but was ultimately edged, 7-6 (5).

Earning Arizona's first win of the day was Thompson on court six. The Brisbane, Australia native clinched the match in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, over Juan Florez.

Clinching Arizona's second point of the day was Urquidi on court two. The El Paso, Texas native fell behind early in his match with Siddiqui, dropping the first set, 6-4. The two fought a close second set and entered a tiebreaker where Urquidi clinched the set, 7-6 (5). The match entered a super-tiebreaker and Urquidi came out victories with an 11-9 win to end the day with a win for the Cats.

The Wildcats fall to 3-8 while the Aztecs improve to 7-3.

Arizona will be back in action on Monday, March 12 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Cats are set to host New Mexico State at 10 a.m.
