TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona womenˇ?s golfer Alison Walshe won her first round match Wednesday at the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.

Walshe, a senior-to-be from Westford, Mass., defeated 54th-seed Katie Miller of Jeannette, Pa., in 19 holes in the first round of match play. She birdied the 15th hole and collected pars on Nos. 16 and 17 before Miller squared the match with a par on the 18th hole. Walshe won the match with a birdie-3 on the 19th hole.

Seeded 11th, Walshe will face the No. 22 seed Catherine Oˇ?Donnell of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in tomorrowˇ?s second round. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT.

The 107th U.S. Womenˇ?s Amateur Championship runs through Aug. 12. Crooked Stick is a par-72, 6,595-yard layout.
