TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team was selected to participate in the 2009 NCAA Regionals, the NCAA announced Monday.
Arizona was seeded sixth in a field of 14 teams and five individuals for the regional at Red Tail Golf Course in Sorrento, Fla., which takes place May 14-16. Included in the field are (seed): Georgia (1), Indiana (2), South Carolina (3), Central Florida (4), Florida State (5), Arizona (6), Augusta State (7), Kentucky (8), Georgia Southern (9), Georgia State (10), Iowa (11), Charlotte (12), Campbell (13) and Loyola, Md. (14). The five individuals are Zach Sucher, UAB; Marc-Etienne Bussieres, South Alabama; Josh Brock, UNC-Wilmington; Bill Jones III, Mercer; and Kelly McHugh, Florida Atlantic.
It marks Arizona's 22nd NCAA postseason appearance in the last 23 years, and the program's 20th appearance in the NCAA Regional since the NCAA adopted the regional format in 1989. This year marks the first time the Wildcats have played outside of the West Regional.
Currently ranked 36th in the current Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, Arizona has five top-five finishes in 11 events in 2008-09.
The top five teams and the low individual from each of six NCAA Regionals qualify for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, which is scheduled for May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
