Arizona Swimming Heads to Texas to Compete with the Mustangs of Southern Methodist

This Week's Schedule: The fourth ranked Arizona women's swimming team will swim against the seventh ranked SMU women. While the eighth place Wildcat men will compete against the 21st place Mustang men. Both events will take place at Southern Methodist on Jan. 12.

The Cats Last Outing: Last weekend the Wildcat women took on Northern Arizona University and defeated the Lumberjacks 127-96. The Arizona women placed first in each of the 13 events. Freshman Artemis Daphnis touched the wall first in three events, the 1650y free (14:08.59), the 200y fly (2:08.36) and the 200y breast (2:24.14). Sophomore diver Claire Febvay placed first in both the one and three meter-diving events. Febvay scored 241.25 points on the one-meter and 281.10 points on the three-meter. Arizona's men team competed against Michigan a meet that came down to the last race of the day in the 400y free relay in which the winner of that event would win the meet. The Cats won the race and the meet when they touched the wall at 3:01.13. The relay team was made up of sophomores Byron Jeffers and Eric la Fleur, senior Kristopher Souther and freshman Max Leassner. Arizona defeated Michigan 124-119. The Wildcats also won the opening race of the day, the 400y medley relay (3:21.31). This relay team consisted of Souther, sophomore Greg Owen, junior Jeff Dash and Jeffers. On the one-meter springboard the Cats went one, two three. Senior Omar Ojeda scored 334.45 points to place first followed by fellow senior Ruben Vaca with 290.90 points and sophomore Alex Vollelunga who had 282.20 points. On the three-meter event the Wildcats took first and second place. Ojeda placed first (352.20) and Vaca (329.00) placed second. The Newest Members of the Wildcats Squad: This year the Cats welcome eight new women on the team and six new men. On the women's side there are two transfer students in Lindsey Highstrom and April Martin. Highstrom comes to the Cats from the University of Nebraska while Martin comes from Rice University. Highstrom and Martin will bring added depth to the butterfly and breaststroke events. Six freshman will join the women's ranks, four swimmers and two divers. For the Arizona men, all six new members are freshman. These men will add depth in the IM, freestyle and breaststroke events.

 
 

The Wildcats Next Outing: The Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams will travel to the San Francisco Bay Area to take on the Stanford Cardinal and the California Golden Bears. The Wildcats will compete against Stanford on Jan. 25 and Cal on Jan. 26.
