BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Freshman Sherlyn Popelka fired a 3-under round of 69 to help the Arizona women’s golf team into a tie for second place after one round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Monday afternoon at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Popelka was even through the first 11 holes before recording back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes. Following consecutive pars, she tallied another birdie on the par-5 15th hole to set the table for her lowest round of the season and share 4th place overall.
Sophomore Nikki Koller rewarded her faith in head coach Shelly Haywood as she shot 1-under par on the day to boost the Cats one more shot up the leaderboard. She shook off a 2-over first nine holes to shoot three-under on the back side, including birdies on 15 and 16.
Despite a bogey on the 18th hole, junior Alejandra Llaneza broke free from some recent struggles and shot even par, matching three birdies against three bogeys. Sophomore Isabelle Boineau matched her at 72, but took a much different route as her round included seven birdies, six pars, three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
Louisville holds a one shot lead over Arizona and UC Davis while Kent State is 3-under par and Washington is 1-under. Alice Kim of UC Davis and Kelli Shean of Arkansas hold the individual lead after shooting 67 on the day.
Ramos wiill be the first to tee off for the Wildcats on Tuesday, October 27 as she leads the team on the par-72, 6,233-yard course at 8:50 a.m.
