TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 21-ranked Arizona volleyball team swept No. 14 California in Pac-10 action at McKale Center on Friday. Game scores were 30-27, 30-25, 30-20.
The win improved Arizona to 18-9 overall for the season and into a tie with Cal in the conference standings at 10-7. The Golden Bears dropped to 15-10 overall with the loss.
The Wildcats out-hit the Bears .306 to .191 on the night, out-blocked them 13 to 6 and posted five more digs (44 to 39) and six more assists (50 to 44) in the win. Arizona remains a perfect 13-0 on the year when hitting over .300 in a match.
Individually, junior outside hitter Kim Glass’ 22 kills provided much of the offense for the Wildcats in the match and in doing so she moved into third on Arizona’s all-time kills list. The two-time All-American had seven kills in the first game, eight in the second and seven more in the final frame to move past former Wildcat Lisa Rutledge on the career list with 1,478 kills in her two plus years at UA. She also served up a match-high three aces and posted two blocks on the night.
Senior Kelli Mulvany, who finished with a match-high 16 digs, also moved up in the Arizona record books. The four-year starter is now second all-time at UA with 1,162 career digs.
Other standouts for Arizona included Bre Ladd, who finished with 10 kills on .350 hitting and four blocks, and setter Stephanie Butkus’ 43 assists and nine digs.
Cal was led by Alicia Powers 13 kills and Angie Pressey’s double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs.
Arizona rounds out the regular season with a match against No. 7-ranked Stanford on Saturday. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. MST.
