BERKELEY, Calif. -

Arizona’s No. 28-ranked women’s tennis team fell to No. 9 California in a 5-2 decision on Friday at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats had some bright spots, as senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) earned a win over No. 53 Tayler Davis at the No. 2 spot and freshman Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) defeated Cal’s Laura Posylkin at No. 6.

Arizona fought hard for the doubles point, winning the first match at the No. 3 spot behind sophomores Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium). At the No. 2 position, senior Sarah Landsman (Syosset, N.Y.) and freshman Hailey Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) fell 8-6, while Marks and sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) pushed their match to 8-5 at No. 1.

“The team had a lot of chances today,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “In doubles, Sarah and Hailey were up 5-1 and playing beautifully before they let Cal back in the match. It wound up costing us the point. In singles, too, we played them very close. The experience showed us that we can compete with a top school, and now we need to find a way to close that gap even more.”

The Wildcats will have a quick turnaround before taking on No. 6 Stanford on Saturday, March 31 at noon in Palo Alto, Calif.
