OKLAHOMA CITY ?- The second-seeded Arizona softball team will begin play at the Women’s College World Series against Pac-10 foe Oregon State at 10 a.m. (MST)/noon (CDT) on Thursday, June 1, and can be seen live on ESPN2.
If Arizona defeats the Oregon State, as it has done in two of the three meetings this year, the Wildcats would face the winner of the Texas-Arizona State match-up. Conversely, if UA loses to the Beavers, the Wildcats would meet the loser of the UT-ASU game.
Arizona’s fellow WCWS participants are familiar adversaries, as the Wildcats faced six of the seven teams in the field during the 2006 regular season. Tennessee is the only squad that the Wildcats did not see this year, but the two teams met in last year’s WCWS.
Earlier in the year, Wildcats met Oregon State (2-1), Arizona State (2-1), Texas (1-2) and UCLA (0-3) three times apiece,
In its 18th trip to the WCWS in 19 years, UA is in search of its seventh national championship. The Wildcats last brought home the title in 2001.
The WCWS format is an eight-team, double-elimination tournament, in which the final two teams standing play a best-of-three series to determine the national champion.
All games can be seen live on either ESPN or ESPN2.
