Steinberg One of Final 16 Players at ITA Regional Tournament

SAN DIEGO ?- Arizona women’s tennis sophomore Danielle Steinberg and company completed the second day of the ITA West Regional, co-hosted by San Diego State University and University of San Diego.


No. 5 Steinberg beat Esther Cadua of SDSU 6-1, 6-0 in her first match Friday and advanced to the round of 16, where she lost a close match to SDSU’s Holly Bagshaw 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), ret.


In the consolation round freshman Sydni Katz was defeated by Brittany Kausen of UCSB 6-3, 6-1.  Sophomore Tina Razloznik lost her consolation round match to Ivey Tanner 6-3, 7-6 (5). 


Camelia Todorova won her first consolation math-up, beating Maria Garcia-Planas, LMU, 6-2, 6-2, but she would lose to UCLA’s Ana Victoria Lind 6-2, 6-1. 


Senior Kasia Jakowlew defeated Noelle Hirniese of UCSB 6-2, 6-1, but lost to Silvia Gutierrez 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2 in the following round.


Arizona freshman Natalia Toporowska was defeated in her second consolation match by Carina Bjornstrom6-2, 7-6 (5), after beating Hawaii’s Jacqui Williams 6-0, 7-5 in her first match.      


In the doubles bracket Steinberg and Toporowska defeated SDSU’s Kathryn Kitts and Alesya Vidov 8-2.  The Wildcat duo will play No. 8 seeded Sarah Fransler and Dianne Matias of USC Saturday at 10 a.m.


In their first doubles match of the tournament, Razloznik and Katz were defeated by No. 5 seeded Amanda Fink and Judy DeVara 8-2.


Rounding out the Wildcats squad was Jakowlew and Todorova, who upset No 6. seeded Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen 8-6. 


Doubles play for the Wildcats will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
