TULSA, Okla. – Jason Zafiros and Andres Carrasco wrapped up competition today at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Men's Tennis Championships at Cascia Hall in Tulsa, Okla. Both Wildcats competed in the Qualifying Consolation bracket where Zafiros swept in straight sets and Carrasco fell short in a tiebreaker.
Zafiros who is ranked No. 107 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings took care of business early, blanking John Huang of Yale 6-0 in the first set. Huang came back in the second set by winning three games, but Zafiros powered through clinching the 6-3 victory. The junior went 1-1 this week at the tournament which featured the top players in the nation. Zafiros made his way into the consolation bracket after he fell in the first round of the Singles Qualifying bracket on Monday to Greg Hirshman of Stanford 6-1, 6-2.
Carrasco, the senior from Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain, got momentum early claiming the 6-4 first set victory over Tobias Wernet of Minnesota. In the second set, Wernet bounced back and defeated Carrasco 4-6. The two battled in the third set tiebreaker, but Wernet edged out Carrasco for the 7-6 (6) win. Carrasco, like Zafiros fell in the first round of the Singles Qualifying bracket to Evan King of Michigan 6-3, 6-3.
The Wildcats will next be in action on Oct.8-10 when they travel to San Diego, Calif. for the Aztec Invitational.
