WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore Danielle Steinberg has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Apr. 2-8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Steinberg posted back-to-back upsets over two of the Pac-10's top players last week, announcing herself as a force to be reckoned with in the Conference. The Wildcats lost to USC and UCLA each by 5-2 scores, but Steinberg's performances in each match were too strong to be overlooked.

Friday vs. the seventh-ranked Trojans, Steinberg started her week with a tiebreaker win at No. 1 doubles with Juliette Mavroleon over USC's Lindsey Nelson and Julie Smekodub.

Taking the singles court, Steinberg and Nelson, ranked 10th in the nation and an NCAA singles finalist last year, battled back and forth in each set but Steinberg managed to come out with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory.

On Saturday, Steinberg worked her way to another upset, this time downing 22nd-ranked Riza Zalameda of UCLA, reversing the outcome of a previous three-set loss to Zalameda in the teams' earlier meeting. Steinberg's only loss on the week came in a very tight, 9-8 (2), decision vs. Zalameda and Lind at the No. 1 doubles spot.

Steinberg, a native of Tel Aviv, Israel, has now defeated three top-25 opponents this season. Earlier in the year she upset Cal's Zsuzsanna Fodor, ranked ninth in the nation at the time. Steinberg has stepped up big in Conference play, owning a 4-2 record.

This is the first career Player of the Week award for Steinberg. In addition, the award is the first for Arizona since its inception at the start of the 2006 season.
