The University of Arizona softball team completed the first day of the Arizona Fall Classic on Friday. The 9-0 win over New Mexico Highlands and the 14-3 win over Arizona Western are both considered exhibition games and do not count toward the team's season record.
In the first game against New Mexico Highlands, the Cats were led by freshman pitcher Leslie Wolfe who had six strikeouts and only gave up one hit.
The Cats scored six of their nine runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a home run to put the Cats up 7-0. Vandergeest hit three grand slams last season. The final two runs came in the third inning by freshman Autumn Champion and senior Lisha Ribellia.
In the second game against Arizona Western, all but two Wildcats managed to score runs. Arizona scored nine runs in the sixth inning, including a home run by sophomore Candace Abrams. Freshman pitcher Ashley Monceaux pitched the first four innings and was later relieved by freshman Alicia Hollowell after Monceaux gave up three runs and seven hits.
Ribellia ended the day with four runs, one double and one triple. Champion ended the day 7-for-7 with six runs scored.
Arizona continues action tomorrow when it faces New Mexico at 5 p.m and Central Arizona at 7 p.m.
