After tying defending champion Stanford for the Pac-10 regular-season title, the University of Arizona women's basketball team has earned the No. 2 seed in the third annual State Farm Pac-10 Conference Tournament. The Wildcats will face the winner of the Oregon State-Washington State game during the second day of action on Saturday, Mar. 6, at 1:15 p.m. PST in HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
Although they tied with Stanford for the league's top spot, the Wildcats (22-7 overall, 14-4 Pac-10) are the No. 2 seed in the tournament, by virtue of the league's tie-breaking procedure. Oregon State (14-13 overall, 8-10 Pac-10) is the No. 7 seed, and Washington State (6-21, 2-16) is the No. 10 seed. The Beavers and Cougars will kick off action on Friday, Mar. 5, at 6 p.m. PST. No. 8 seed Oregon and No. 9 seed California will square off in the second game of that day at 8:15 p.m. PST.
First-round action on Saturday starts at 11 a.m. PST with No. 3 seed USC facing No. 6 seed Washington, followed by Arizona's game with the Oregon State-Washington State winner.
Arizona earned a sweep at the Washington schools last weekend to wrap up Pac-10 play with a 14-4 mark that equals the program's best-ever conference record. The Wildcats were picked by both the coaches and the media in preseason polls to finish second this year.
Last season, Arizona tied with Washington for second in the conference, but the Cats received the No. 3 seed because of tie-breaking procedures. During the inaugural Pac-10 Tournament in 2001-02, Arizona was the No. 6 seed.
