TUCSON, Ariz.--Head Coach Mike Stoops decided to eschew a 17th pre-season practice on Thursday and instead give the Wildcats a day off.

Well, sort of.  Corey Edmond, director of performance and enhancement, still had the team rotating through the Estes Family Strength and Conditioning Center for group workouts. But, they were tailored more for maintenance than his usual rigorous sessions, he said.

"This is more of a recuperative day," Edmond said while directing a dozen players in exercises and weight lifting. "We want to get the blood flowing and the muscles working. We have to keep the strength developed over the summer. You don't want to lose that edge," he said.

Football operations director Erick Harper said Stoops felt the team needed some other activities after five practices Monday through Wednesday, including 90 minutes of scrimmage action last night, and 16 total practices since camp opened Aug. 4 . "The guys need a break," Harper said.

"You're kidding, right?" senior tailback Mike Bell asked when told there would be no practice Thursday. "That's awesome."

UA is scheduled to hold two practices Friday and a morning workout Saturday before the Meet the Team scrimmage  Saturday evening in Arizona Stadium. Gates open to the public at 4:30 p.m., with the team to enter the field at 5 p.m. for autographs, and the scimmage to commence at 6:30 p.m..

The Wildcats will begin their regular season practice schedule when classes begin at the University on Monday. Arizona opens the season Friday, Sept. 2, at Utah.
